GREENE – A 16-8 run by the host Greene Trojans allowed the fourth-seeded team to rally back in the third for the lead and ultimately the 61-50 win in the Section IV Class C boys basketball quarterfinal game against number 12 Groton Friday night.
The Groton Indians, who were coming off an upset win over Unatego a few days earlier, were off to a strong start against the fourth-seed Trojans.
Junior guard Kalib Manning of the Indians led the visiting team to a 17-11 first quarter lead as he went off for 13 of the team’s points – including nine from behind the 3-point arc.
In the second quarter, Groton’s scoring came from James Lucey as he tallied nine of the 14 points. Manning was held without points in the stanza until later in the second when he scored two buckets before the halftime buzzer sounded.
Greene outscored the Indians 17-14 as five different players registered points in the quarter and the home team cut the Groton lead down to three at the intermission.
Nate Barry, who tallied five in the second, took control for the Trojans out of the break. Barry attacked the inside to score 12 of Greene’s 16 points in the third quarter.
At the other end of the floor, the home team nearly stalled Groton’s offensive leaders Manning and Lacey, holding them to two baskets between the two players. In return, Greene was able to capture the lead for good.
Trailing by five points to start the fourth, the Indians made one last push to pull off yet another upset, but it was Drew Erickson’s perfect foul shooting that held the late run off.
Erickson was 10-for-10 at the free throw line down the stretch, accounting for most of his 14 points scored in the contest. Teammate Nolan Butler recorded 12 throughout the contest, spacing his scoring over the course of the four quarters to make a quiet impact.
Barry ended the night with 21 to lead all scorers.
Groton’s Manning finished with a team-best 19 points while Lucey and Kade Eldred each chipped in 12 in the loss.
Greene heads to SUNY Cortland on Tuesday for a matchup against top-seeded Watkins Glen for the sectional semifinals. The game is scheduled to start at 8:30 p.m. and the winner will advance to the Class C championship game to take on either Delhi or Newfield for the title. The championship game is to be announced following the semifinals.
