OTEGO – Just a few days after pulling off a surprising upset, the Lady Blackhawks were looking to do the same to third-seeded Unatego in the Section IV Class C girls basketball quarterfinals Saturday afternoon.
Unfortunately for Oxford, the host Lady Spartans had the Blackhawks’ number early in the contest as Unatego cruised to a 72-39 victory to move on in the sectional tournament.
Despite the loss, Madalyn Barrows of Oxford finished with 13 points while teammates Karley Miller and Caitlyn Quigley each chipped in nine points.
The Blackhawks kept it close at the conclusion of the first quarter, trailing by just three points. However, the Lady Spartans took over in the second, doubling Oxford’s point total of 12 to go into the break ahead by 15 following the 24-point scoring spurt by the home team.
The game didn’t get any easier for the Lady Blackhawks as Unatego tallied 36 points in the second half, compared to Oxford’s 18-point output in the final two quarters of play.
Oxford recorded 32 turnovers in the contest, which allowed the Spartans to score 19 points off the miscues.
Unatego also held the advantage at both the free throw and 3-point lines. The Spartans and the Blackhawks took the same number of attempts from behind the arc but Oxford made just one while the home team drained six shots.
Five of those made 3-point field goals came from the sharp shooting hand of Hali Lucia, who ended as the game’s leading scorer with 17 points.
Lucia hit three 3-pointers to pace the Spartans’ 24-point second quarter.
At the charity stripe, Unatego took 21 free shots and made 14 while Oxford tried just 10, seeing four go through the net.
The Spartans’ Meghan Perry, Paige McCoy and Morgan Perry also registered double figures in the scoring column, combining for 34 points of Unatego’s offensive production. Meghan Perry and McCoy each posted 14 points while Morgan Perry tallied 10.
Oxford ends their season with a final overall record of 13-9.
