CORTLAND – With hopes of making it to the Section IV Class C finals, the Greene Trojans were a single game away. Having to go through the top-seeded Senecas of Watkins Glen to get there, the Trojans knew they were going to have their hands full.
Watkins Glen captured an early nine point lead after the first quarter and extended the margin to as many as 15 before the end of the first half. The big lead was enough for the Senecas to hold off Greene’s late game push and the 63-52 win Tuesday night at SUNY Cortland.
Adam Pastore of Watkins Glen paced his team in the 17-point first quarter with eight points. The Senecas continued to build on their lead with seven 3-point field goals in the first half. In the second quarter alone, Watkins Glen had four different players make a shot attempted behind the arc.
After just scoring eight points in the opening stanza, Greene found a little bit of an offensive rhythm behind balanced production from five players.
The hustle play from Nate Erickson, who was making his season debut after an injury sustained during the football season, helped the Trojans’ chip away at the deficit in the second half.
Erickson was all over the place, grabbing rebounds and snatching up loose balls to give the possession back to Greene as often as he could.
With a quiet first half from leading scorers Nate Barry and Drew Erickson, the two came alive in the second. Drew Erickson went a perfect 4-for-4 at the foul line and added two 3-pointers while Barry worked the inside game.
The Trojans were able to cut the lead down to 11 heading into the final eight minutes of play. Their defense disrupted the Senecas’ offensive flow as the team who was 7-for-13 behind the arc in the first half went cold from long-range, making just one in the last two quarters.
Unfortunately for Greene, the shot opportunities that became available late in the contest did not fall through the net and the Trojans season was cut shorter than they would have liked.
Greene’s Drew Erickson led the team with 16 points. Barry finished with nine and Buttler contributed seven in the loss.
The Senecas had four players finish in double figures with Pastore tallying a game-high 21 points. Max Evans ended with 15 and Issac McIlory scored 12. Owen Scholtisek chipped in 10 for Watkins Glen.
The Trojans complete the season with a 15-6 overall record and appearance in the Midstate Athletic Conference championship game.
