OXFORD – The Oxford School District held its second annual Greatest Show and Tell Expo on Thursday night showcasing projects from numerous primary and middle school students.
According to Oxford Primary School Teacher Clayton Kappauf, this year's expo was a success with over 34 exhibitors, and an automatic ticket booth built by third graders. Kappauf said food and drinks were also available at the event including pizza, popcorn, and lemonade.
He said the event was inspired by something called the Maker Faire, which is a national movement focused on promoting science and creativity. He added that the projects at Thursday night’s event ranged from paintings, drawings, and crafts to games, food, and mechanical creations.
“We’re doing this because the Maker Movement is inspiring and it creates great learning opportunities, it encourages critical thinking, problem solving, and collaboration,” said Kappauf. “It’s exactly what is predicted that our students will need to be successful in the future.
He said the automatic ticket booth, created using cardboard and lego-based technology, was something that the third grade students worked up until the morning of the event to allow it to run effectively.
Kappauf said the ticket booth accepted hand cut cardboard tokens which activated the ticket distribution sensors on their lego machine, and that the ticket taker had a similar system but that it would sense the ticket and pull it in automatically – playing an audio clip from students that said, “Welcome to the greatest show and tell expo!”
He said creations like this and the many others that were at the expo are something the school is very proud of.
“We’re really proud of our students and their parents for supporting them,” he added. “This is a wonderful event that we hope to continue to bring back and add onto each year.”
Kappauf said other staff members also assisted with the event including Brian Collier, Greg Lehr, and Holly Cirello.
