GREENE – A yoga studio called Universal Prana is offering free yoga sessions for cancer patients, survivors, and their caregivers as a way to give back to its community and promote personal well being.
According to Studio Owner and Yoga Teacher Dawn Hahn, mats and props will be provided at the studio and drop-in’s are welcome, and yoga instructor Grace Solano opted to work without fees for these special classes.
The classes will be held from noon to 1 p.m. every Sunday from March 15 to November 29 at the Universal Prana Studios at 35 Genesee Street in Greene.
Hahn said these sessions, called Yoga4Cancer classes, use gentle - restorative postures, meditation and breath work to support the mind, body, and spirit during and after cancer treatment.
She said Solano is a yoga teacher with additional certification in Yoga4Cancer (y4c) and Reiki II.
“With a background in nursing, her passion for helping others has shaped her love of using yoga and reiki as healing modalities to balance the mind, body, and spirit,” said Hahn.
Solano also spoke about the classes and said she is currently doing a fundraiser to help cover additional expenses so she can keep the classes free.
“I’m doing this fundraiser to raise money for Yoga4Cancer classes in my community,” said Solano. “After my dad was diagnosed and passed away from cancer I set out on a journey to bring Yoga4Cancer classes to my community in Binghamton.”
“Like my dad I love helping others the best I can and I started the Yoga4Cancer classes to support people going through cancer treatment and cancer survivors. I’m so thankful to offer the Yoga4Cancer classes in my community and any amount donated to my fundraiser will be greatly appreciated.”
Those who are interested in donating to the fund may visit gofundme.com/f/yoga4cancer-fundraiser?utm_source=customer&utm_medium=copy_link-tip&utm_campaign=p_cp+share-sheet for additional information.
Hahn said Grace is teaching without receiving a fee, and that the funds raised go to things like rent, electricity, heat, and supplies.
She added that when she took her first yoga class she was astonished how present she felt after leaving the studio.
“My niche is being able to adjust classes to specific needs,” she said. “Whether it be spinal stenosis, recent surgery, a chronic condition, I wanted people to be able to restore themselves.”
“It is not about how you can bend yourself into a pretzel or how many chaturangas you can do. It's about finding your center of contentment no matter where you are in life. That is the essence of yoga.”
