BINGHAMTON – In a game not many thought the Purple Tornado boys basketball team were going to be in, the Norwich group added more excitement of the unimaginable to start the Section IV Class B championship game.
Unfortunately for Norwich, Seton Catholic’s Brett Rumpel, who was averaging around 35 points per game, took the driver’s seat for the Saints and led his team to the Class B title behind a 45-point performance in the 79-52 victory Sunday night at the Floyd L. Maines Veterans Memorial Arena.
The Seton Catholic junior guard tallied 28 points in the second half, pacing his team to take the comeback after the Tornado held a 15-point advantage in the early minutes of the second stanza.
The Purple Tornado out-rebounded the Saints 37-32 but turned the ball over 16 times compared to Seton Catholic’s seven.
Another key factor to the game was the trips to the free throw line. While Norwich attempted just 18 foul shots all game – making 11 of them – the Saints were 29-for-42 at the charity stripe, taking nearly three times as many of the Tornado.
Norwich started the game off with a 10-0 run against the nine-ranked team in the state, shocking the Saints and Tornado fans alike. Senior Jahlil Jones was the scoring leader during the early run, tallying six of Norwich’s first points.
Ending the run was Rumpel, converting the traditional three-point play with a layup and the free throw but those points didn’t come until there was 3:40 left in the opening stanza.
The Tornado worked to get the ball to man in the middle, often times finding Jones in the paint in the early going as Jones continued to finish at the rim, putting up 10 of Norwich’s 16. Passes were coming from all of his teammates as Carson Maynard, Carson Thorton and JT Vinal came away with assists during the spurt.
The Tornado went ahead by nine after taking the senior took a pass from Thorton, scored on a screen-and-roll with Maynard and added an inside bucket following a dish by Vinal.
Vinal then added a fast-break finish to make it made it 20-9 with 55 seconds left in the first.
The opening minute of the second quarter saw Vinal scored again on the inside and Tommy Flanagan hit a 3-pointer from the corner in front of the Seton bench, extending Norwich’s lead to 15 points.
Shaking off their slow start, the Saints went on a 23-7 run – all points except three coming from either Rumpel or junior Marcus Dyes – to cut the Norwich lead and close out the half with the momentum considerably in Seton’s favor.
Rumpel blocked a baseline drive attempt from Maynard. The Seton Catholic stand-out then caught the deflection, started a fast-break and delivered a pass to colleague Dyes for a layup. Dyes was fouled and completed the and-1 play to bring the Saints within one.
Seconds before the end of the first half concluded, Rumpel drove to the rim but the Norwich defense swarmed with hopes to fend of the Saints from taking the lead. However, Rumpel found Dyes standing outside the 3-point arc and kicked it to his team. Dyes knocked the shot down as the buzzer sounded, awarding a 33-32 lead to the Saints at the break.
It didn’t get any easier for Norwich as another Dyes’ 3-pointer jumped-started a 10-point rally in the third, allowing Seton to slowly pull away for the win. answered with a three-pointer off the dribble from the top of the key to kick-start a 10-point Saints spurt.
The Tornado hung around until later in the third as Jones once again produced much of the Norwich offense. He registered seven of the Tornado’s 10 points scored in the third quarter. Scoring 21 on the night to lead the Norwich, his final points came by another pick-and-roll play with Maynard for a 42-39 lead with 3:32 left in the stanza.
A Rumpel 3-point field goal tied the game 18 seconds later. 40 second after, Rumpel drove to the hoop and finished to give the Saints to lead – ultimately for good.
The Purple Tornado offense stalled, recording just 10 points in the time remaining in the game while Rumpel and Dyes combined for 24 of Seton Catholic’s fourth quarter total.
The Saints finished with 30 in the final eight minutes play and received 3-point field goals from Vince Sullivan and Michael Bucko. Bucko ended the night with eight points.
Dyes, who was quiet until late in the second quarter, put together a double-double showing Sunday night. The Seton Catholic junior forward came away with 23 points in the win and a team-best 10 rebounds.
Norwich’s Jones added 10 boards to his stat line to end his career night pointing double-figures in two columns. Vinal, who is also a senior on the Tornado roster, scored 11 and grabbed 10 rebounds in the loss.
Norwich completes their season with a 17-5 record.
