Simultaneous bridge replacement on NYS Route 41 will begin next month
CHENANGO COUNTY – The New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) sent out a notification stating construction for the replacement of two bridges on NYS Route 41 will start next month.
The department held a public open-house informational meeting about the bridge replacement proposal back in September of 2018. During the meeting, it was explained that the work zone traffic controls used during construction would be to close the bridges and manage traffic using off-site detours.
The proposed off-site detour for the bridge over Cornell Creek in Afton would detour traffic from NYS Route 41 onto County Road 26 and 233, and NYS Route 7.
The proposed off-site detour for the bridge over Wilkins Brook in Coventry would detour traffic from NYS Route 41 onto County Road 17 and NYS Route 206.
While the planned detours remain unchanged, the work zone traffic control plan has been updated to close both bridges and use both off-site detours at the same time.
"This was the contractors decision to do it at the same time," said Engineer-in-Charge Henry DeJager, "It will reduce the overall impact on traffic to do it this way."
DeJager stated that the two detours should only add three to five minutes of travel time to a commuters daily drive.
The detours will be in effect from May 1st until August 31st. The notice given by the NYSDOT states that variable message sign boards will be used to raise awareness to the traveling public. Construction is anticipated to be completed within the 2020 construction season, depending upon weather and availability of resources and materials.
Questions and comments about the progress if construction can be directed to Henry DeJager by email at henry.dejager@dot.ny.gov or by phone at 607-726-0963.
