LATHAM, NY – In a statement released late Wednesday afternoon by the New York State Public High School Athletic Association (NYSPHSAA), the Bowling State Championships as well as the boys’ and girls’ State Basketball tournament are set to go on as scheduled.
“It continues to be the goal of the New York State Public High School Athletic Association to host the Winter Championships with direction from the New York State Department of Health, local county health departments and Governor Cuomo’s office,” Dr. Robert Zayas, the NYSPHSAA Executive Director said in the statement. “At this time, we are moving forward with the championships, however the impact of the coronavirus could necessitate revisions to the championship schedule.”
As a result of the COVID-19 (or the coronavirus), a Class AA sub-regional contest between Monroe-Woodbury and Ursuline that was scheduled for Wednesday night was postponed until further notice. Dr. Zayas made the call to delay the game and has yet to release a make-up date as it is pending the official guidance from the NYS Department of Health, Orange County Health Department and Westchester County Department of Health.
Zayas is currently working with both communities in an effort to have this sub-regional played prior to Saturday, March 14. However, at this time, Norwich’s regional basketball game as well as other Class B contests have not been affected at this time. Fan attendance to the game at the Floyd L. Maines Veterans Arena has not been impacted and will still be allowed at this time.
No adjustments have been made to the NYSPHSAA Bowling State Championships, which is scheduled to be held this weekend at AMF Strike ‘N Spare in Syracuse. The NYSPHSAA staff has received no concerns or communications from the state or local health departments pertaining to mass gatherings in this part of the state.
Another sport that has been affected by COVID-19 is the NYSPHSAA Ice Hockey Championships at the LECOM-Harbor Center for March 14-15. With the recommendation of the Commissioner of the Erie County Department of Health, fans will not be permitted to attend.
“This is certainly not the type of championship atmosphere our association strives to provide to our student-athletes and their communities,” Dr. Zayas said in the statement. “This decision is being made at the recommendation of the Erie County Department of Health out of an abundance of caution as we address the coronavirus.”
The NYSPHSAA Ice Hockey Championships will be streamed LIVE on the NFHS Network as originally scheduled.
Pre-purchased tickets for this championship event will be fully refunded in the next 24 hours.
