NORWICH – The Norwich Police Department has six new recruits on the way, and has created new policies to help slow the spread of the coronavirus amongst emergency responders and the public.
At Tuesday night’s City of Norwich Common Council meeting, two new officers, Nick Mooney and Cameron Prime, were approved to join the Norwich Police Department.
In January, Corey Bennett, Corey Wengent, Scoit Laughlin, Tyler Dexheimer were added as new recruits, and currently they are in an academy in Syracuse.
Norwich Police Department Assistant Chief Scott Burlison said the recruits are a needed addition to the police department, and at this point their academies are continuing forward as scheduled.
According to Norwich Police Department Chief Rodney Marsh, in accordance with the current protocols and recommendations in place by the Center for Disease Control (CDC), State and County Health Departments, the Norwich Police Department has made several adjustments to limit the possible exposure and spread of the COVID-19 virus within the Norwich community.
“When calling the Norwich Police Department, either the 334-2424 or the 334-1212 numbers, please provide a call back number when possible,” said Marsh. “Depending on the type of call or situation, an officer will decide whether the call requires a response for an in-person contact.”
Marsh said if the call does not require an officer to respond, the caller will be provided a case number and the report will be completed over the phone.
“If the type of call or situation does require an officer to respond to your home, please be prepared to step outside and speak with the responding officer in an open-air environment,” he said. “This will enable officers to abide by the recommended social distancing guidelines.”
“Please be assured the Norwich Police Department will still be available 24/7 and will continue to respond accordingly to all emergency types of calls for service.”
The police department asked that the public remain calm and thanked them for their future cooperation and understanding during this time.
