SHERBURNE – The Center State Conference (CSC) released the 2019-2020 girls and boys basketball All-Stars on Monday following the state’s announcement that the rest of the winter sports season was canceled.
Sherburne-Earlville junior Tessa Cole was named as the CSC Division I Most Valuable Player for the season.
Starting the year just 250 points shy of 1,000 points for her career, Cole reached the milestone on January 14 against Clinton with a 3-point field goal. The junior helped lead the Marauders to an 8-13 overall record and a third place finish in the division (7-9).
Cole ended the year as Section III’s fourth leading scorer with 491 points in the 21 games played, averaging 23.4 per game. On December 14, Cole scored a season and career high of 35 points against Bainbridge-Guilford – one of her five 30-plus point games.
She led all of Section III with 65 made 3-point field goals and was ranked 12th for her 78 assists over the year. With her 98 steals, the junior finished sixth overall in the section. Cole picked up two double-doubles on the year – one with points and rebounds and another with points and steals – while being one or two shy in different categories for more.
Also selected to the All-Stars were senior teammates Elizabeth Peila and Maria Albertina. Peila finished the season with 198 points, the second most on the Lady Marauders, and added 151 rebounds, 22 assists and 51 steals. Peila recorded three double-doubles throughout the season in the points and rebounds column and registered a season-high against Sauquoit Valley with 20 points.
Albertina, who also ended the year with three double-doubles, led the team in the rebounding column with 164 and added 116 points with 12 assists and 20 steals. In a 64-56 loss to Holland Patent, Albertina recorded one of those double-doubles with 16 points and 15 boards.
The Sherburne-Earlville boys basketball also finished third in the league standings for Division I with a record of 5-8 (9-11 overall). The Marauders’ Gabe Irwin and Robert Hill were the two team members named to the CSC All-Stars list.
Irwin, a senior point guard for the Marauders, totaled 251 points for the year to lead the team. His season-high of 28 points came on December 27 when S-E defeated Unadilla Valley 60-49 in the Storm’s Holiday Tournament. Of his points, Irwin scored more than half from behind the 3-point line as he made 50 shots on the season.
Hill finished the season with 242 points as one of the Marauders forward’s. With his ability to shoot the 3-point shot, Hill ended the year with 21 made shots from beyond the arc. Hill’s season-high came in a 65-55 win against division foe Adirondack where the Marauders forward tallied 26 points.
