A letter from Rep. Anthony Brindisi on the COVID-19 response

Dear Friend,

The coronavirus emergency has reached a critical stage, with the number of confirmed cases of COVID-19 in New York topping more than 20,000 and growing. Governor Cuomo has asked many New Yorkers to stay home to prevent the outbreak from spreading further. I know that Upstate New York families are struggling right now. We will get through this together. If you’ve been laid off, furloughed, or are struggling as a small business owner due to the coronavirus pandemic, there are government resources available to help you and listed below.

Last week, I held a telephone town hall with more than 10,000 participants. I was joined by health care experts and New York State Small Business officials to help our community work together to address this crisis. Telephone town halls, and e-mails like this, are critical to making sure every member of our community knows what’s going on.

Over the past few weeks I’ve helped pass bipartisan legislation that provides enhanced benefits for the unemployed, paid sick leave, and small business assistance, among many other key resources.

General Health:

For the most up to date information on the COVID-19 health care response, please contact your county health department, the New York State Department of Health (coronavirus.health.ny.gov), and check for updates from the federal Centers for Disease Control (CDC) (www.cdc.gov/coronavirus). We are also staying up-to-date with the latest from the CDC at brindisi.house.gov/coronavirus. It is crucial that everyone continue to follow CDC guidelines for preventing COVID-19.

Unemployment Aid:
The federal government has provided states with new resources and flexibility to grant unemployment benefits to workers laid off due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Unemployment claims are now being expedited. Please visit the Department of Labor’s website: labor.ny.gov/unemploymentassistance.

If you have questions about this process or need further assistance, click here to find the contact information for your local state representative, or call my office at (315) 732-0713.

Resources for Small Businesses:
The U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) has issued Disaster Declarations to all New York counties and opened an online application portal for small businesses to apply for its Economic Injury Disaster Loans. Upstate New York businesses can apply for low-interest, emergency loan assistance through the SBA. Applicants are encouraged to apply online at disasterloan.sba.gov/ela or call the SBA at 1-800-659-2955.

Coronavirus Tax Relief:
New York State’s tax deadline has also been moved to July 15, 2020. More information on the ways the Department of Taxation and Finance can assist during the COVID-19 pandemic can be found at www.tax.ny.gov.

Hunger/SNAP:
The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) issues electronic benefits that can be used like cash to purchase food. SNAP helps low-income working people, senior citizens, the disabled, and others feed their families. Learn more to see if you are eligible and apply for SNAP here: www.ny.gov/services/apply-snap. Our local food banks can also help with this application.
Additional food bank resources can be found by calling: Food Bank of the Southern Tier - (607) 796-6061 or Food Bank of Central New York - (315) 437-1899.

Meals on Wheels provides nutritious home-delivered meals to help seniors and people with disabilities. You can learn more about eligibility and services available in your neighborhood by visiting www.mealsonwheelsamerica.org/find-meals.

The health and safety of Upstate New Yorkers is my top priority. As Congress considers additional actions to protect our public health and our economy, I’m pushing for access to more masks, ventilators, and other supplies for our health care workers; additional support for rural hospitals; financial relief for small businesses, those who are out of work, and seniors on a fixed income; and programs to support our farmers to make up for losses during this time.

While my offices are closed to the public, my staff is continuing their work for Upstate New York remotely and can provide information on government resources. Give us a call in Utica at 315-732-0713 if you need help with government agencies or visit my website: https://brindisi.house.gov/coronavirus.
Sincerely,

Rep. of New York's 22nd Congressional District, Anthony Brindisi
