NORWICH - Residents seeking pistol permits will have to wait as the Chenango County Clerk’s Office has officially closed to the public.
According to Chenango County Clerk Mary Weidman, her office has closed to the public as part of the statewide movement to reduce the spread of the coronavirus.
Weidman said individuals who wish to turn in pistol permit applications or documents may do so by mail, but that any pistol permit applications that weren’t received before the closure won’t be processed until the office and court systems officially reopen.
“It's a very dangerous time, and people need to be cautious of the spread of the disease,” said Weidman. “We are not doing in-office public access currently, but people are able to search all of that information online at our website.”
She said individuals who wish to research public access data may visit www.co.chenango.ny.us/clerk/ for additional information. She added that several different services are available on the website.
“We are basically shut down for the public at this point,” said Weidman. “When we were doing appointments only, people were very good about the whole situation and we appreciated that.”
“We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause to Chenango County residents, and we hope everyone stays safe during these challenging times.”
Other offices in the Chenango County Office Building are also closed including the Department of Motor Vehicles as part of New York State Governor Andrew Cuomo’s attempt to slow the spread of coronavirus.
According to a statement from the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles, all Licenses, Non-Driver ID's, and registrations with an expiration date of March 1, 2020 or later will be extended.
The department also said all DMV Offices are closed and road tests are suspended until further notice, and Traffic Violation Bureaus are adjourned through April 17. All reservations have been cancelled.
As DMV responds to the impact of COVID-19, representatives said the processing of some transactions and the provision of some services may be delayed.
