Census responses rise and officials plan for in-person visits next month
CHENANGO COUNTY - After an advertising push from Congressman Anthony Brindisi and Senator Chuck Schumer, almost a quarter of Chenango County’s population has been counted in the census, and despite the growing number of virus cases in the area officials said census takers will be visiting homes as early as next month.
According to a statement from New York State 2020 Census Representatives, census workers must fulfill their constitutional obligation to deliver the 2020 Census counts to the President of the United States on schedule, and they must adhere to their core task of counting everyone once, only once, and in the right place.
In the statement officials said census workers plan to conduct the Nonresponse Followup operation in a handful of communities beginning as early as April 9, and across the country on May 13.
They said The Census Bureau will closely follow guidance from public health authorities when conducting the operation, and if they need to delay or discontinue nonresponse follow-up visits in a particular community, they will adapt our operation to ensure they get a complete and accurate count.
Chenango County Planning and Development Director Shane Butler said Chenango County has nearly a quarter of the county accounted for at 23.4 percent. Butler said the Town of Greene is leading in responses with 32 percent, the Town of Bainbridge is next at 29.5 percent, and the Town of Norwich is in third at 29 percent. Butler added that the City of Norwich is at 27.4 percent.

The quickest way to respond to the 2020 Census is online with your Census ID, which easily links your response with your address. However, you can still respond if you don't have a Census ID. By April 1, most homes will have received an invitation to respond. Homes that have not already responded will receive a paper questionnaire in mid-April. From May through July, census takers will follow up in person with every home that has not responded to the census. If you have not received anything from the Census Bureau yet, you can still respond online. Visit the online form and select “Start Questionnaire.” Below the ID field, click the link that says, “If you do not have a Census ID, click here.”
