Chenango County receives funds to upgrade the Public Transit System

CHENANGO COUNTY – At April 13 Chenango County Board of Supervisor’s meeting, it was announced the county approved $980,000 to make upgrades to the Public Transit System.
According to the board of supervisors meeting minutes, the Capital Assistance Grant, administered by New York Department of Transportation, allows for the purchase of up to 14 buses and other equipment, such required radios and mobile fare collection devices.
Funding for the Capital Assistance Grant program is eighty percent federal, ten percent state, and ten percent local share. The local share is being paid by First Transit, who will be receiving the overall funding for new buses.
Clerk of the Board RC Woodford said, “There's not been a whole lot of movement since the funds were approved, we still need approval by the Department of Transportation before making any purchases. The appropriation of funds was done so when its time to move ahead with the purchase we have the approval already.”
Woodford said the county has spent much of its time dealing with pandemic, and they will be able to focus on public transit upgrades as the healrth crisis receeds.
