NORWICH - The Norwich High School is coming up with new and different ways to celebrate the Class of 2020 Seniors as they finish their final school year from home.
Decision Day, which is usually on May 1, is a day to celebrate senior’s post secondary school decisions and acceptance to their desired colleges or trade schools. On April 13, Norwich High School Principle Kisten Giglio and Assistant Principle Kristin Fox sent a letter to seniors asking them to email or text in a photo of themselves along with a form that covers their post graduation plans.
On May 1, the school posted photo's to their Facebook page showcasing over 20 seniors representing their college choices. Many colleges have extended their enrollment date to June 1, so the school plans to do another showcase of seniors on that date.
The school is still planning on holding a graduation ceremony for the senior class.
"We do have plans for an in-person ceremony. What we do know is that the students will be able to attend with their families and that parents will have the pleasure of handing their son or daughter their diploma. We don’t yet know if it will be done one at a time or in small groups as those are some of details that still need to be worked out to ensure that we are following the Governor’s directives," said Giglio.
As another way to honor and celebrate the senior class, at 8:20 p.m. every Monday and Friday the school will be turning the stadium lights on for 20 minutes. In the letter to seniors from Giglio and Fox, they explain that in military time, this is 20:20 and they’re staying on for 20 minutes so celebrate the class of 2020. They suggest using that time to "make a conscious effort to reach out to one another, check in on someone in your class, send an encouraging text to a classmate, call someone in the class of 2020, call a parent of a senior or whatever other creative way you might have to connect with the senior class of 2020."
Recently, the student government has also gotten involved with helping the class celebrate. According to the school's Facebook page, with the help of a donor, the Norwich High School Student Government had "Senior 2020" yard signs made for every Norwich Senior and drove to every single student's home or workplace to drop them off. A video dedicated to the class of 2020 that shows the distribution of the signs can be viewed on youtube at https://youtu.be/ETc1d5n0Ozo.
