NORWICH – With the COVID-19 pandemic bringing postponements and cancellations of many yearly summer events, the Canasawacta Country Club Member-Guest tournament will not be one of them.
Earlier this week, CCC’s General Manager Tim Carson announced the 2020 Member-Guest Tournament will take place the weekend of August 5-8, keeping the summer tradition at the course on the schedule for the 62nd straight year.
“Everyone here at the club is very excited that the event will still take place,” said Carson. “It is a tradition that many – both the members and the guests – look forward to every August and we are happy to still host.”
Golf courses have been one of the few business entities allowed to remain open for most of the New York State on PAUSE as social distancing precautions can take place at the large outdoor locations. The CDC and New York State implemented mandated guidelines at all golf course at the start of the PAUSE Executive Order back in March to promote safe, social distancing regulations.
As Carson and his team at Canasawacta have practiced these guidelines since being put in place, the country club was able to host the first of the Players Cup events last weekend – the Member-Member tournament. The father-son pairing of Jeff and Ryan Johnson took first place in both the gross and net divisions.
“After the tournament this past weekend as well as hosting our leagues that we have so far this golf season, myself and the staff feel very confident that the tournament will go smooth and all guidelines will be met,” Carson said. “Everyone has been very respectful of the changes made to the course and we can see that continuing throughout the summer and at Member-Guest.
To meet the 50-percent capacity guideline set by New York State Governor Andrew Cuomo, Carson said there will be some slight changes to the usual schedule of events as well as those who are able to attend.
He said that for the social distancing purposes, all events included will be players only and measures will be in place to keep the minimum requirements for the number of people allowed in any one space.
In the past, after Thursday’s first round of action, the players are the only people at the club but Friday and Saturday have friends and family in attendance for the special events hosted by the staff.
The tournament will be limited to the first 80 completed entries submitted accompanied by at least the minimum downpayment of $150 of the entry fee. Applications are currently being accepted at the pro shop or by email.
The format for the 2020 Member-Guest Tournament will be a non-handicap, best ball stroke play competition for 54 holes. After 36 holes of play, all teams will be flighted. The top eight scores plus ties will compete in the always sought after Master’s flight or the championship division.
