NORWICH – On Thursday, SUNY Morrisville Norwich Campus, along with Helping Hands Norwich, worked together to provide food and essential items to over 450 Chenango County resident during the second local drive-thru distribution day.
Cars began filling the parking lot of the Chenango County fair grounds at 12:30 p.m. for the event which wasn’t scheduled to start until 2 p.m. Once the gates were opened, cars lined up with their trunks open to receive items such as milk, yogurt, potatoes, and hygiene products.
The SUNY Morrisville Norwich Campus Student Government Organization, along with community volunteers, filled the cars with dairy products and fresh produce. The cars were then directed to the Helping Hands station to be loaded with male and female hygiene bags and non-perishable food bags.
Helping Hands Director Lorri Race said, “We have over 700 bags to give away. It’s just incredible. So many people contributed and we’re so thankful.”
Helping Hands also gave away $2500 in gift cards for local businesses in order to help give back to the community.
Chobani was at the drive-thru providing 7,200 cups of yogurt and refrigerated trailers to help keep items fresh.
Chobani Community Engagement Manager Don Brown said, “We love to do events like these. Chobani gives away yogurt at lots of events, but it’s events like these that serve people who need it most that are really important.”
Congressman Anthony Brindisi also came to the event to help distribute food to the community.
“I wanted to be able to come out and help distribute some of these great New York State dairy products to folks in the community. There’s a big need out there right now as people are out of work to have fresh food products and what better then some of the New York State products that we have represented here today,” said Brindisi.
Brinsidi also shared how grass root efforts like this event are exactly what it means to come together as a community.
“This is what makes our community so great. In our greatest time of need here we have people across the community who are coming together to help those who are in need. There are a number of tremendous partners both from the business community to local food producers, local colleges who are represented. That’s what we do best here in upstate New York, we’re tough and we come together to support each other in our time of need,” said Brindisi.
This was the second Chenango County Local Drive-Thru Distribution Day. There is another scheduled for June 4 at the Chenango County Fair Grounds.
