Norwich’s Gieslinger adds All-America Honorable Mention to list of honors

NORWICH – Many thought when Purple Tornado Dante Geislinger claimed his third straight title, that was the end of the high school recognition as the senior is set to graduate in a few short weeks.
He wasn’t quite done as he added another honor to his resume. The Norwich High School Athletic Department announced Tuesday morning Geislinger was named to the Wrestling USA Magazine 2020 High School All-American Honorable Mention Team.
The Purple Tornado senior was just one of four student-athletes named to the honorable mention team for the entire state of New York and was the lone wrestler for the 113-pound weight class.
To be included as one of Wrestling USA’s All-American’s, the athlete must be nominated and have a long list of accomplishments – both in-season and offseason tournaments including the Super 32 Challenge, Cadet National Championships, and the National High School Coaches Association (NHSCA) Championships.
As a freshman, Gieslinger placed second at the Section IV Division-II championships. After the setback early in his career, it was rare he walked off the mat without his arm raised at the end of a bout.
To go along with his many first-place finishes in tournaments throughout the offseason and his pee-wee wrestling day, the Norwich senior complied a final record of 150-16 with he won 91 by pinfall – meaning he pinned his opponent 60.7-percent of the time. Of his 16 losses, he was pinned just two times – both coming in his freshman season.
Geislinger racked up four Clyde Cole titles, three Windsor Christmas Tournament championships, four Southern Tier Athletic Conference (STAC) first-place medals as well as four Section IV Class wins.
Geislinger ended his high school tenure in February winning his third Section IV titles and taking the top spot of the podium at the state championship for the third time in a row – one of only 10 New York State wrestlers to win that many in succession.
In both his junior and senior seasons, Geislinger placed second at the Eastern States Classic – the largest in-season tournament on the east coast. His two losses at the tournament in two years came at the hands of Shenendehowa’s junior Stevo Poulin – the No. 2 in the nation for 113-pounds.
In February, Geislinger was unsure if he was going to continue his wrestling career at the next level.
