NORWICH - The Ford Motor Company donated 1,000 face shields to UHS Chenango Memorial Hospital as part of their effort to help fight the coronavirus.
According to UHS Chenango Memorial Hospital Director of Fundraising and Business Development Melissa Stagnaro, the donation was completely unexpected, but greatly appreciated by hospital staff.
We started at the beginning of March with 50 face shields in inventory,” said Stagnaro. “Pre-COVID-19 we only used them in certain areas of the hospital and as the virus concerns were raised they were all on backorder.”
She said several organizations have donated face shields in the past, but this donation alone would account for two weeks worth of face shields for hospital staff members.
“To get a thousand face shields from Ford is incredible, that alone is two weeks worth of added protection for the employees in our hospital,” she added. “The General Manager of Matthews Ford, Mickey Blanford, was so humble.”
“As we were trying to thank him, he was thanking us for what we've done during the pandemic.”
Stagnaro said Blanford expressed his gratitude to both the hospital as well as to their partners at Ford for both manufacturing and distributing the much-appreciated supplies to our local hospital.
Stagnaro added that she had heard about donations of this magnitude by businesses on a national level, she didn’t expect something like this to happen in Chenango County.
“Our community is one that many people wouldn’t be able to find on a map, so we just want to thank everyone at Ford for caring about their communities regardless of their size,” said Stagnaro. “Thank you to Mickey and the entire Matthews team, as well as Ford Motor Company, from the manufacturing floor to the executive suite, for making sure our little rural hospital in upstate New York has the supplies we need to keep our staff, patients and community safe in these challenging times.”
