Census workers conducting home drop-offs in Chenango County

CHENANGO COUNTY - Representatives of the Chenango County Planning Department confirmed that representatives of the census will be doing at home visits throughout the upcoming weeks, but warned that it’s important residents beware census scams.
According to Chenango County Planning Department Director Shane Butler, Chenango County is falling behind in the goal of increasing census responses, with it only beating two other counties in the Southern Tier. He said a reason for the lack of responses is that residents with a PO Box haven’t received questionnaires, and in the more rural sections of the county PO Boxes are more common.
“This week, the Census Bureau has restarted limited field operations in Chenango County, specifically for the Update Leave operation,” said Butler. “Census workers are delivering 2020 Census invitations and questionnaires to households which have not yet received them; mostly at rural addresses that do not get regular mail delivery.”
“The health and safety of the public and census employees remains a top priority.”
Butler said census employees will be wearing face masks and will deliver these packages at each household without attempting contact with residents. He said hopefully by avoiding contact with residents both census workers and homeowners will have a reduced chance of contracting or spreading the coronavirus.
He said these visits will affect about 12 percent of households in Chenango County, primarily in the Towns of McDonough, Plymouth, German, Otselic, Pitcher, Lincklaen, New Berlin, Pharsalia, Smithville, Smyrna, North Norwich, Sherburne, Preston, Oxford, Guilford and Greene - but could also include sporadic neighborhoods in other municipalities.
He added that currently Chenango County is falling behind Cortland, Broome, and Tioga Counties, but is still ahead of Delaware and Otsego at a 49.5 percent response rate.
“In the last census we ended at 58.1 percent, but we’re hoping to do even better this time,” said Butler. “People don’t realize how important the census is, especially with everything thats happening with COVID-19.”
“This is what government entities are going to use to determine aid for schools, municipalities, and much more.”
