OXFORD - Friday at the Oxford High School, volunteers from Oxford school dsistrict, Helping Hands, and the community came together to hand out food and hygiene items to community members in need.

The drive-thru opened at 10:30 a.m. for seniors, allowing them time to go through the line before the anticipated rush. The food and hygiene drive was scheduled to run from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., however by noon Helping Hands was handing out the last of their 200 hygiene bags, and the food stock was dwindling down to it’s last 20 bags out of 400.

Just up the road from the food drive, volunteers were sitting outside handing out free ice cream to those waiting in the 80 plus degree weather.

50 food and hygiene bags were also delivered to community members living in McDonough. If anything was left over, Volunteer Sarah Smith from Promote Oxford Now said they would donate the remaining items to the Oxford Food Pantry.

Food items included Milk, Cottage Cheese, Produce, Sour Cream, Block Cheese, Butter, Eggs, Honey, Pasta, and Chobani Yogurt. Hygiene bags included shampoo, razors, baby wipes, body wash, and more.

"The biggest part that came from this was people would come through and say how uplifting this was," said Smith.

There were seven volunteers handing out hygiene bags, and fifteen volunteers handing out food. Smith explained that all the volunteers helping at the event where community members who wanted to come out and help make a difference.

"We have volunteers from Promote Oxford Now, school teachers helping out, and just community members who wanted to help. The great thing about this community is all you have to do is ask, and the people come," said Smith.

Donations were made from Kutik's Honey, Gilligan's Ice Cream, Oxford Fire Department, Jan L'Hommedieu, The Oxford Rotary Club, Ye Old Shanty, Emerson, Lee, and Palmer, Seek and Restore, David and Mary El Emerson, Gallery Three-Two-One, Faith Bible Church, Nourish New York, Spencer Excavating, Gates Photography, The Foundation Church, Price Chopper, Kuhn's Equipment Repair, Weidman Farms, Nina's Restaurant, The Stadium, JiJi's Designs-4-U, Chobani, Tiger Lily Farm, Blueox Evergy, Oxford Tac Service, and Canal Street Hardware.

Donations for Promote Oxford Now can be mailed to P.O. Box 11, Oxford NY 13815 in the form of a check made out to Promote Oxford Now.

Helping Hands Director Lorri Race said, "We had an amazing turn out from donors, we gave out 200 bags in one hour. The event was ran very efficiently by the oxford volunteers and we got all the bags out without a hitch. The community was so grateful and receptive, just a great event overall."

On June 18 at 6:30 p.m. at the Norwich YMCA, Helping Hands will hold another community donation night to distribute food and hygiene items.
