Schools seek information from state as NY extends voting deadlines
CHENANGO COUNTY - New York State Governor Andrew Cuomo announced over the weekend that he would be extending school budget voting deadlines, but some local school districts are unsure of how to proceed due to a lack of communication from the state.
Cuomo’s office released a statement discussing the proposed school budget votes on Sunday, which reports that school budget ballots will be accepted by hand delivery through 5 p.m. on June 9th and received by mail through June 16th by the school district.
Several school districts throughout Chenango County, including Oxford, Norwich, and BOCES, reported having no prior knowledge of the changes.
DCMO BOCES Superintendent Perry Dewey said BOCES won’t be overly impacted by the changed date for school budget votes, with school districts already approving its administrative budget.
“We have no idea what the governor’s going to say until he says it,” said Dewey. “It’s extremely unfortunate that he continues in this light and creates confusion.”
Dewey said he had a meeting with superintendents from around Chenango County Monday morning, and that it’s difficult for schools to make decisions until after they’ve received the Governor’s executive orders.
“Districts don’t really have a lot to go on right now,” said Dewey. “We met today already, and we’ll probably meet again this week to help make sense of everything going on.”
“Each district has been informed based on the best information we have.”
According to Norwich City School District Interim Superintendent Diana Bowers, the Norwich City School District is going to move forward with the anticipated changes, and will stop accepting drop off votes at 5 p.m. Tuesday.
“We’ll stop accepting drop off ballots, but we’ll continue to accept them by mail,” said Bowers. “We’re required to wait until the 16th to count the ballots.”
“We have over 1,500 ballots returned at this point, which is a fairly impressive response.”
Bowers said in years past there were responses as low as 200 to 300 ballots, and that she wasn’t exactly sure what caused the increase in ballot response. She added that she was happy to see more people getting involved in the process.
