NORWICH - The Chenango County Board of Supervisors approved a measure Monday to continue a longstanding 1 percent additional sales tax that will help fund the county correctional facility for the next three years.
The additional 1 percent tax, first enacted in 2002, applies to the sale of any goods and services, as well as accommodations in Chenango County. Initially set to expire in November of this year, the measure as approved Monday won’t lapse now until November, 2023.
County officials say the enactment is necessary to pay down debts incurred during construction of the Chenango County correctional facility on Upper Ravine Road in Norwich and help fund the jail’s operational expenses. Any leftover revenue is to be placed in a capital reserve fund.
