NORWICH – A brick multi-family home on Mitchell Street is scheduled for demolition, forcing Mitchell and State streets to be temporarily closed for at least two days.
According to City of Norwich Fire Department Chief Jan Papelino, on May 29, 2019, six residents of 33 Mitchell St. were forced to leave their rental home after the side of the building collapsed. Papelino said no one was injured in the incident, and the City of Norwich came to acquire the home due to back taxes in January.
It will be torn down on Monday and Tuesday of next week.
“I think just looking at the safety aspect of it, it needs to be taken down. We don’t want kids going in and out of the wall,” said Papelino. “It's only a matter of time before something else happens with it, so we need to get it down as soon as possible.”
Papelino said that on Aug. 28, Gorick Construction and Demolition will go into the area and set up barriers to protect nearby houses. He said that on Aug. 31 and Sept. 1, the intersection and the streets will be shut down as well.
