2020 General Election information for Chenango County

Election Day voters, whose numbers have waned in recent years because of expanded options for casting ballots, likely will be reduced even further this year with a surge in vote-by-mail popularity during a pandemic.

CHENANGO COUNTY – With just five weeks left before the General Election, Nov. 3, voters will have to decide how they plan to vote. Whether it be in person or by absentee ballot.

The New York State Board of Elections (NYSBOE) recently announced the creation of a one-stop absentee ballot web portal that will allow all registered voters to apply for an absentee ballot with a simple online form.

“The portal will make it easier for New Yorkers to apply for an absentee ballot and it will also make it easier for our boards to process the applications,” said Todd D. Valentine, Co-Executive Director of the Board.

According to the NYSBOE, once the voter receives their absentee ballot, they may return in four ways.

Put it in the mail ensuring it receives a postmark no later than November 3. By bringing it to the County Board of Elections Office during regular business hours, on or before November 3. They can bringing it to an early voting poll site between October 24 and November 1, or by bringing it to a poll site on November 3 by 9 p.m.

The General Election early voting will take place at the Chenango County Board of Elections Office, located at 5 Court Street in the basement level. The dates and times for early voting are as follows: October 24, 25, 31 and November 1 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.; October 26, 28, and 30 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; October 27 and 29 from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.

According to the Chenango County Board of Elections local polling sites are expected to be open on Election Day from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m., with the exception of the town of German voters who will vote at the Smithville polling site located at the Geneganslet Fire Station, located at 5273 State Highway 41 in Smithville Flats. The town of Bainbridge will also have a new polling site and it will be located at Bainbridge Town Hall, 15 North Main Street.

In order to qualify to register to vote in New York a person must be a United States citizen, 18 years old, and a resident of this state and the county, city or village for at least 30 days before the election

A person can not vote in New York if prison or on parole for a felony conviction, adjudged mentally incompetent by a court, or claim the right to vote elsewhere.

In-person voter registration applications must be received by 5 p.m. on Friday, October 9 at the Chenango County Board of Elections office. Change of addresses must be submitted by Wednesday, October 14.
Chenango County Democratic Party Commissioner Carol Franklin said post cards have gone out to voters with information on where and when local polling sites will take place.

According to Chenango County Republican Party Commissioner Mary Lou Monahan the county will have 78 new poll workers to help with this years election.

"We are ready and prepared for a full election day," said Monahan.
