New York Schools now required to submit positive COVID testing to public

CHENANGO COUNTY – Report cards aren't just for grading this year in school districts across New York State. Governor Andrew Cuomo announced last week the start of COVID-19 school report cards, an online platform that allows individuals to access information about positive cases within local school districts.
Currently there are only two school districts in Chenango County with reported positive COVID-19 cases.
Unadilla Valley Central School District has one reported case and was able to remain open due to the limited exposure of the virus.
According to the state website, three lab positives have been reported in the Norwich City School District. The school did not return calls for comment Tuesday and has not yet reported any positive cases.
The school report cards can be accessed by going to www.schoolcovidreportcard.health.ny.gov.
Deputy Superintendent of the NYS Department of Financial Services Gareth Rhodes explained that every day each school must submit a survey to the department of health that gives information on the teaching model for that day, whether it be in person, hybrid, or totally virtual. They receive the number of enrolled teachers, students, and staff that are on site and off site as well as the number of COVID-19 tests administered to students and staff and number of positive results for both on site and off site.
The state also gets information from testing labs that has the names, ages, and addresses of every person who gets tested for COVID. New York State Department of Health looks at the school age population of positive cases, ages five to seventeen, and includes how many children in the school district tested positive on the report card.
"I will note that you will have that data from the labs and you will have that data from the school surveys. It will not always match up perfectly because sometimes when the school district reports and the lab reports there might be a slight lag. But the goal here is to give parents and New Yorkers full transparency. If the school district isn't reporting all the cases they should you'll at least have it from the lab," said Rhodes.
"I encourage every parent, every teacher, you want to know how your school district is doing? You want to know how your district is doing compared to other school districts?" said Cuomo, "You can go to this website and you can find out."
The online platform includes not only public grade schools, but also private schools, charters, and colleges.
Cuomo said that all he can do is make sure the public has the most up to date information and look to the people of the state to act accordingly.
"If you see a problem, react quickly. That's our strategy. How do we do this, we do it the way we did when we started on day one. I don't do anything. I produce information for the people of the state, the people of the state then act responsibly and intelligently because they have the information. They just need the information. We know they're going to act responsibly, because they have, that's how we know. Only two people passed away yesterday because New Yorkers act responsibly. But I have to get them the information."
