Chenango County Sheriff: Woman shot boyfriend twice and then called police

Kelly Gillett

SHERBURNE – According to preliminary police findings of an ongoing homicide investigation in the Village of Sherburne: on Monday morning a woman used a 20-gauge shotgun to murder her boyfriend inside a home at 7 Gould Drive, shooting him twice before calling police.

According to the Chenango County Sheriff's Office the woman dialed 911 at about 11:11 a.m. to report a shooting. Chenango County Sheriff Ernest R. Cutting Jr. confirmed the suspect, Kelly Gillett, 36, of Johnson City, later told police she was responsible for the killing and said she needed a lawyer.

“Basically, there was no argument or a fight. She took a shotgun and shot him, he tried to get away and she shot him again,” said Cutting. “She called 911. She was at the scene and we took her into custody without incident.”

The investigation is ongoing anyone with information should call the sheriff's detective division at 607-337-1935.

“They were a boyfriend-girlfriend thing, in a relationship for several years.” Cutting said the couple were not familiar to police. He said police knew of no history of domestic issues between the couple and Gillett did not appear to have any criminal record at the time of her arrest. He said drugs did not appear to be a factor, but tests would need to be done.

Chenango County First Assistant District Attorney Christine Rudy said Gillett was arraigned in Village of Sherburne court Monday evening and was remanded by Judge Kayphet Mavady to the Chenango County Correctional Facility without bail.
The victim, 39-year-old Jonathan Ryan, is a father of three children, all of them from a previous relationship. Cutting said none of the children were at the home at the time of the shooting and that they are staying at a separate residence.

Ryan is from Sherburne and attended the Sherburne-Earlville School District as a student.

Asked if Gillett had made any admissions to the shooting the sheriff responded “Yes, she did.”

Cutting said Gillett admitted to police investigators who arrived at the scene she was responsible for the shooting and told an officer she needed a lawyer, turning herself in and ending further questioning.

In filing second degree murder charges against Gillett, Sheriff Detective Sgt. Gary Miller noted to the court she had made oral admissions to officers and that she had intentionally shot the victim twice.

Sheriff’s Lt. Joshua Gould said an initial investigation determined Ryan died from gunshot wounds, and was dead upon police’s arrival. He added that a shotgun was collected as evidence in the case, and the entire incident occurred inside the Gould Drive residence.
“It's a terrible tragedy and circumstance. She's been arraigned in Sherburne court on murder and held without bail,” Cutting said there was no danger to the community. “He is deceased and she is under arrest, it is an unfortunate tragedy.”

“We are still investigating and waiting for tests but it doesn't seem to be drug related,” said Cutting.

The sheriff's office acquired warrants after responding to the scene and serious crimes investigation units from a number of agencies responded.

The sheriff's office is leading the investigation with assistance from the Village of Sherburne Police, Sherburne EMS, the New York State Police, the Chenango County medical examiner, and the Chenango County District Attorney's Office. Officials from those organizations processed the scene Monday and Tuesday.

“We are still investigating the incident,”said Cutting, “There will be an autopsy, a lot of interviews, we will talk to local people - relatives. Tests will sent away to labs, for evidence, which can take months,” said Cutting.
