CHENANGO COUNTY – Election day is less than a week away, and with high turnouts for early voting, officials remind voters that social distancing guidelines are still in place.

According to Chenango County Democratic Party Commissioner Carol Franklin, there has been a large turnout in early voting during this election season, and if trends continue voters can expect lines and wait times.

Franklin said early voting will be available from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Thursday, 9 a.m. to to 5 p.m. on Friday, and 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday at the Board of Elections Office, 5 Court Street in Norwich.

“Voters will have had three ways to vote besides in person on November 3, absentee, early voting, and in person absentee on November 2,” said Franklin. “This is unpresented, we’ve never had a turnout like this since I started here, but that being said this is the first time we’ve had a situation like this.”

“It’s good that people have the interest in making sure they get out and vote.”

She said it’s important voters keep in mind that the county office building, much like the polling sites on November 3, is maintaining social distancing guidelines. She added that only a few voters are allowed into the sites at a time, which may lead to longer lines and waiting times.

“Temperatures will be taken, and masks are required,” said Franklin. “No one is ever turned away, and there are ways people can vote even if they have a temperature.”

“If the polling site doesn’t have a separate area for individuals who can’t wear masks, we’ll go to their cars for them.”

Franklin said individuals who haven’t mailed in their absentee ballots can take them to their local polling sites and they’ll be put into a secured pouch. She said people who do that won’t have to wait in the regular line to do so.

She added that local polling sites are expected to be open on Election Day from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m., on November 3, with the exception of the Town of German voters who will vote at the Smithville polling site located at the Geneganslet Fire Station, 5273 State Highway 41, Smithville Flats, NY.

Franklin said beginning with the November 3 General Election and all future elections, Bainbridge voters will vote at the Bainbridge Town Hall, 15 North Main Street, Bainbridge.
A list of polling sites is available at https://www.co.chenango.ny.us/elections/documents/PollingSites.pdf for individuals interested in learning where they should vote on November 3.
