Norwich’s Community Advisory Board discusses the future of city’s law enforcement

NORWICH – As per New York State Governor Andrew Cuomo’s recent criminal justice reforms, law enforcement are required to work with their community to come up with reform plans by April 1, 2021.
According to the governor’s office, the initiative is being called the New York State Police Reform and Reinvention Collaborative, and any law enforcement agency that fails to provide a new reform plan won’t be eligible for state funding in the future.
In the City of Norwich, meetings for the Norwich Police Department’s Community Advisory Board have been held at 3 p.m. on Wednesdays in the meeting room at the Norwich Fire Department.
The meetings are limited to a max of five members of the public, with reservations and social distancing required.
At this Wednesday’s meeting, board members discussed ways there can be more cohesion between law enforcement and Norwich residents. Topics including community policing, neighborhood watch, and educational opportunities were discussed by board members.
City of Norwich Mayor Shawn Sastri said anytime a decision is made at the meetings, it will be sent to the common council for a vote where public comments could be heard. Sastri said the advisory board consists of a wide array of community members, and is supposed to help provide different perspectives on local law enforcement.
“We want to make sure we’re being as transparent as possible with the community,” said Sastri. “This is all about bringing the community to light, and letting them know that this committee is out there looking at making changes to our local police department.”
“We’re hoping that we’ll be able to make some improvements, and look at ways our police department could be even better.”
Those interested in attending a community advisory board meeting must register by 5 p.m. on the prior Tuesday by calling the Deputy City Clerk at (607) 334-1201.
