Police investigate fatal accident in Coventry

COVENTRY – The Chenango County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a fatal accident that occurred over the weekend in the Town of Coventry.

According to Chenango County Sheriff’s Office Lieutenant Joshua Gould, the accident occurred at approximately 1:44 p.m. Saturday afternoon on State Highway 235 in Coventry.

Gould said Austin R. Smith, 20, of Harpersville was driving a Lexus, and Kyle E. Smith, 26, of Afton was driving a Jeep on State Highway 235.

He said Kyle attempted to pass Austin, accidentally hitting the back left corner of the vehicle, and going off of the road.

He said Austin spun into oncoming traffic where Dennis E. Robinson Jr, 36, of Susquehanna, P.A. was traveling south in the northbound lane in a Dodge Ram pickup truck.

“Our initial investigation is showing that the one brother was attempting to pass the other brother when the accident occurred,” said Gould. “Kyle attempted to avoid the truck in the oncoming lane, and swerved in front of Austin.”

“Kyle hit Austin’s vehicle on the drivers' side, causing it to go off road, and he also went off road on the western shoulder, flipping into a nearby field.”

Gould said Austin Smith attempted to get back onto the road, slid into the northbound lane and was struck by Robinson. He said that while charges haven’t been filed in this case, the investigation was still ongoing.

“Austin Smith was pronounced dead at the scene,” he added. “Both of the other drivers were taken to Wilson Medical Hospital to be treated for injuries, and while they did sustain some serious injuries there doesn’t appear to be any that were life threatening.”

Gould said road conditions didn’t seem to be related to the accident, and that it was “cold and windy, but it wasn’t wet or slick.”

He said that members of the Coventry and Sidney Fire and Rescue Teams responded to the scene, and New York State DOT also assisted at the scene with traffic diversion.

He added that all lanes of traffic were blocked for several hours while investigators looked into what happened, and cleaning crews removed vehicle debris from the area.
