Funds available for organizations seeking to help people in need
CHENANGO COUNTY – The Chenango County Emergency Food and Shelter Program (ESFP) is now accepting applications from organizations seeking to help people with economic emergencies not related to a disaster.
According to Chenango United Way Executive Director Elizabeth Monaco, the Emergency Food and Shelter Program is a federal aid program created to supplement and expand the work of local social service agencies, both nonprofit and governmental.
“This supplemental funding is open to all organizations helping hungry and homeless people,” said Monaco. “ESFP funds must supplement feeding, sheltering, diapers, feminine hygiene, and rent, mortgage, and utility efforts only.”
There are a variety of eligible programs including: congregate meals, food purchases, home delivered meals, mass shelters, hotel/motel vouchers, rent/mortgage, cleaning supplies for shelters and feeding sites, diapers and feminine hygiene products, mall equipment purchases up to $300 per item, utility services for clients.
Monaco said the Chenango County EFSP Board uses this funding application to determine the highest level of needs and the best use of annual funds in Chenango County. She said that funding is limited each year, and for 2021, the total dollars available for Chenango County is $18,690.
She added that for those receiving funding in Phase 37 and Phase Cares, these phases will run concurrently with Phase 38 and all will require spending end dates of May 31, 2021.
Monaco said ESFP applications for feeding, utility and housing programs are available as of 1/6/21 at the Chenango United Way Office, 83 North Broad St., Norwich, NY 13815 or by calling (607) 334-8815 or (607) 244-3716
“Your application must be completed and submitted to the Chenango United Way by January 25, 2021,” said Monaco. “Applications received after this deadline will not be considered for funding.”
“And, the absence of your request by this deadline will imply that your program does not wish to be considered for Phase 38 funding.”
Monaco said applicants will be informed of funding decisions as soon as possible, and that funding levels are not guaranteed from year to year.
“All applicants must have a Data Universal Number System Number (DUNS), must have a Federal Employer Identification Number (FEIN), must maintain a checking account in the organization’s name for EFSP direct deposits, must pay vendors directly within 90 days for services provided, and must be able to submit required reports with signatures electronically,” she said.
Those with additional questions may call Elizabeth Monaco (607-334-8815) at the Chenango United Way with questions regarding this application process.
