Norwich High School temporarily shifts to remote learning

NORWICH – The Norwich High School recently announced that it will temporarily move to remote learning until January 20 due to quarantine orders.

According to Norwich City School District Superintendent Scott Ryan, the shift is based on recent quarantine orders, some were mandatorily imposed by the Department of Health and others were precautionarily imposed by the district.

Ryan said the move isn’t related to a surge in cases throughout the high school, but that it is related to the impact of quarantine on staff members and workplace functionality.

“This is really just precautionary, it’s not about an increase in covid cases,” said Ryan. “There are several pieces of our organization that need to be working in order to have in person instruction.”

Ryan said due to an exposure, key sections of the school, in this case cafeteria workers, were asked to quarantine. He said with a key area exposed, the school and public health officials determined it would be best to move staff and students to remote instruction for the short term.

He added that while the move is precautionary for now, the overall goal is to avoid an increase in cases and prevent a future shutdown.

“We want to avoid a shutdown, because we believe in person instruction is the most effective way to educate,” Ryan said. “All of those things are in constant evaluation, and our number one priority is to keep people safe.”

“We’re looking at partnering with DCMO BOCES in the future to help provide meals to our students in situations like this to help prevent future issues.”

Ryan said in person instruction helps teachers remain aware of students' emotional condition, and while some students do very well on remote learning, the preference appears to be in person.

He said all affected students and staff have been contacted, and that all swimming, indoor track, and athletic conditioning has been postponed until January 21 as well, although bowling will be able to continue as it occurs off ground.

He added that students will return to in person instruction on January 21, and in the meantime BOCES students will be able to attend their CTE program.
