Chenango United Way hosts successful fundraising campaign

CHENANGO COUNTY – In 2020 Chenango United Way raised more than $428,000, and funded 19 programs along with four community impact initiatives, getting the majority of its goal and raising more than $100,000 for COVID-19 relief efforts.

According to Chenango United Way Executive Director Elizabeth Monaco, thanks to some last minute donations from the Chenango County community, they were able to reach approximately 95 percent of their campaign goal for 2020.

Monaco said the funds raised are dedicated towards helping people in Chenango County, and many people who have been seeking help since the start of the pandemic are people who have never asked for help before.

“Our community was in rough shape before COVID hit, and this pushed ALICE families over the edge,” said Monaco.

She said ALICE stands for Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed and represents approximately 40 percent of the Chenango County population. She added that people who make above the federal poverty level, but less than the cost of living fall into the ALICE population.

“This year’s campaign was really tough, in December we were at about 60 percent of our goal, but we managed to reach 95 percent with some incredibly generous last minute donations,” said Monaco. “Campaign is always important because our organizations rely on it every year, but this year to have raised just under $140,000 on top of that for COVID relief is incredible.”

Monaco said Chenango County is a caring and generous area, and many individuals who were concerned about the impact the pandemic would have on local families donated to try and help.

“We were asked to open the COVID relief fund literally the week that the governor shut everything down, and we were shocked by the number of requests we received when we did,” said Monaco. “We’ve done disaster relief funds in the past, but this one was by far one of our largest.”

She said many Chenango County families were struggling before the virus hit, and now that some people have been laid off from their jobs, and others are dealing with reduced hours, the situation has only been made worse.

She added that it will be several years before the area has fully recovered from the economic impacts of the virus, but fortunately in the meantime people are living in a community that cares.
