S-E defeats UV with Eaves’ Heroics
NEW BERLIN – It was a drama filled evening on Friday February 26th for the Sherburne-Earlville Marauders and Unadilla Valley Storm as S-E’s Preston Eaves sunk the game-winner for the visiting Marauders with three seconds on the clock as S-E escaped with a 48-46 win over the host Storm.
In a tightly contested game, the visiting Marauders jetted out to a 14-10 lead over UV at the conclusion of the first eight minutes of play, but the hometown Storm had reclaimed a 25-22 lead as the game stopped for the halftime break. UV’s offense was led in the second period from Brayden Potter who cashed in on a pair of trifectas along with Kyler Butts’ six additional markers in the quarter.
The resilient Marauder squad bounced back in the third quarter retaking the lead 36-35 as the period came to a close. S-E’s Preston Eaves paced the Marauder offense as he scored eight points in the stanza, with six of his points coming from beyond the arc.
In the fourth quarter, Unadilla Valley gave the Marauder’s all they could handle. The Storm roared back in the game’s final moments to tie the game, leaving S-E’s Head Coach Kevin Vibbard to draw up the final play.
Vibbard put the ball in the hands of Preston Eaves who swished the eventual game-winner for the Marauders with a mere 0:03 left to go in the ballgame.
“We told the kids in a timeout late in the game if the score was tied we were going to run the clock down and give Preston the chance to create the last shot,” said Vibbard, “He did just that and he made it.”
Preston Eaves led the Marauders in scoring with 17 points on the evening with Brock Weidman pitching in 11 points.
For the Storm, Brock Davis and Kyler Butts each scored 11 points to lead UV.
S-E (2-1) returns to the floor tonight when they travel to Canastota with tipoff slated to begin at 7:30 pm.
UV returns to the court when they host Afton tonight with game time starting at 6:30pm.
