OXFORD – Hundreds of people received vaccinations last week throughout two mass vaccination events held as a partnership between Bartle’s Pharmacy, the Oxford Fire Department, and the Chenango County community.
According to Bartle’s Pharmacy Owner Heather Bartle, mass vaccination events were held at the Oxford Fire Department last week, with volunteers from the community stepping up to ensure as many people could be vaccinated as possible.
“We received 1,100 first doses of vaccine, and we’ve been able to administer more than 1,000 second doses of vaccine as well,” said Bartle. “It really is a community effort to get everybody vaccinated.”
Bartle said getting one of the first COVID-19 mass vaccination sites established in Chenango County wasn’t easy, but passionate volunteers from the area have kept the effort moving.
“We had kind of a rough start over at the fire station, we just logistically we didn’t have everything set the way we wanted, we were having internet issues, registration issues, and some other things that had us backed up,” she said. “They got us taken care of [on Friday], with all of the volunteers over at the firestation coming together Norman Rockwell style.”
“These guys have really risen to the occasion, there were points of time that I felt like this effort was killing my staff because we were all working full time before this and we still are. Everyone is really passionate about our community and our seniors, they want to keep them protected and I think it shows with how many firemen, auxiliary members, business owners like Romas, and our own staff have responded.”
Oxford Fire Department Chief Ron Martin said his fire department’s commitment to fighting COVID doesn’t end with those two mass vaccinations, and they are planning on helping with manpower and housing for the mass vaccination sites for as long as they’re needed.
“We’re working with the community members as well as Bartle’s Pharmacy, and for as long as this pandemic goes on and the vaccinates are available, we’re in the long haul effort with them,” said Martin. “We want to thank Bartle’s and the other community members who have helped support this truly collaborative effort.”
Bartle said a big part of that collaborative effort was the Chenango County Department of Public Health.
“I can’t say enough good things about the Chenango County Department of Public Health,” she said. “I first became a pharmacist vaccinator it was in 2008, and I didn’t have many peers to turn to for guidance and direction.”
“They took me under their wing from day one and taught me everything they know.”
She added that instead of making the situation more difficult, the department of health helped her to vaccinate the community and save as many lives as possible.
“There was never any turf war or battle about who's going to be vaccinating people, and so I attribute our success to their success,” said Bartle. “We work very closely with everyone at the department of health.”
