Emerald Knights roll past Marauders

SHERBURNE – Playing their third game in three nights the Sherburne-Earlville Marauders varsity boys’ basketball team sought to continue their winnings wins after their win over Sauqoit Valley on Wednesday night. Unfortunately for S-E, untimely turnovers took the wind out of the Marauder’s sails as the visiting Hamilton Emerald Knights defense took over in the second half to dispatch S-E 64-38 on Thursday evening.
Sherburne-Earlville gave the Emerald Knights all they could handle in the opening quarter as Brock Weidman set the nets on fire- scoring eight points in the opening minutes, keeping the game close for the hometown team as Hamilton took the lead 16-12 at the conclusion of the initial stanza.
“I thought we played very well in the first quarter” said Sherburne-Earlville Head Coach Kevin Vibbard on his team’s opening quarter effort. Just as the S-E started to settle in, the Emerald Knights turned up the heat finding their groove in the second stanza, scoring 18 points to lead the Marauders 34-21 into the halftime break.
The third period proved to me unkind to the Marauders as their first five offensive trips down the floor to start the stanza were all turnovers. The early second half miscues by S-E proved to be deadly as Hamilton made sure to take full advantage of the Marauder’s 28 turnovers on the night as Hamilton scored 17 points in the quarter all the while giving up a single point to S-E, to extend their lead 51-22 entering the fourth quarter as the Emerald Knights rolled to a 64-38 victory.
“We turned the ball over way too much” said Vibbard, “We turned the ball over the first 5 times we had it in the third quarter, and Hamilton really extended the lead at that point.”
Brock Weidman led the Marauders in scoring with 13 points.
Sami CiGerable led Hamilton in scoring with 16 points, Ryan Rutledge scored 14 points and Tom Simpson chipped in 10 markers of his own.
Sherburne-Earlville (4-5) returns to the hardwood on Saturday March 13th for their season finale when they travel to Hamilton in a repeat match-up against the Emerald Knights with tip-off slated for 10:00am.
