St. Baldrick’s fundraiser has record breaking year
NORWICH – The St. Baldrick’s fundraiser for childhood cancer research in Norwich had a record breaking year with people from all over the Southern Tier shattering the original goal of $30,000.
According to Norwich St. Baldrick’s event co-coordinator A Wesley Jones, organizers thought while they might make their goal, they didn’t expect the overwhelming financial support from this year’s event.
“We were going to be happy just breaking our $30,000 goal, but in the end we’re going to end up having our biggest year ever,” said Jones. “Even when we were at the event and donations were coming in we didn’t realize how well it was going until afterwards, and then we realized we may be able to beat our all time high.”
“The volunteers for this event are the ones who make it happen, and our shavees did an amazing job of getting attention for the cause.”
Jones said so far the event has raised $36,725, and the record they broke was at $36,581. Jones added that while the event would normally rely on gifted items from the community, raffle tickets, and t-shirt sales, this year’s event was successful based on the number of added online donations.
“We’re looking forward to seeing how everything could blend together post-COVID,” he said. “I think they’ll do a hybrid type solution for the event then, it seems like there's a desire to broadcast it again that way so people who couldn’t attend in person can do so freely online.”
He added that the event couldn’t have done well at a better time, and that the St. Baldrick’s Foundation lost millions in funding due to cancelled events all throughout the United States alone.
“The foundation has lost millions of dollars just in events that were cancelled due to the pandemic over the last year,” said Jones. “We knew we couldn’t do an event in person with everything going on, but we wanted to host an event and make sure that we were delivering to the foundation.”
“As it worked out, it ended up being our biggest year to date, and we can’t thank the community and everyone else who donated enough for that.”
