WATERVILLE - Sherburne-Earlville's defense had no answer for Canasota running back Devon Youker.
Youker scored four of his team's touchdowns in the first half helping his team build a huge bulge in a 35-0 victory over the Marauders on Saturday afternoon.
"He was awesome," said Sherburne-Earlville coach Ed Holmquist of Youker. "He's a quality athlete, and really, (Canastota's) whole program is top-notch."
According to unofficial statistics, Youker had TD runs of 42 and 72 yards in the opening stanza as the Red Raiders built a 21-0 lead.
With the lead expanded to 28-0 late in the first half, the Marauders' offense drove inside the Canastota 20 before turning the ball over with a fumble.
Youker then delivered a back-breaker scoring on an 89-yard scoring dash with less than a minute left before halftime.
Neither team scored in the second half.
"In the second half, I felt that we settled in, and offensively, moved the ball more," Holmquist said. "We still had untimely turnovers, but the defense did a better job getting into the right position, and making plays."
Derick Miller led the Sherburne-Earlville rushing attack with 52 yards on 11 carries, and Ben Menard rushed for 41 yards. As a team, S-E finished with 155 rushing yards.
Holmquist said the move back from 8-man to 11-man football this season -- and having just two weeks to prepare for the first game -- was the hardest two weeks of his coaching career, but is glad his team is back on the field.
"Obviously, it's an uphill challenge, but it's been worth it," Holmquist said. "…no excuses (for this loss), it is what it is. We have to own it on all levels. As coaches we need to improve, the players have to improve - the whole program needs to improve."
Sherburne-Earlville (0-1) plays its "home opener" Saturday against Westmoreland on the turf field at Sauquoit Valley High School. Game time is 11 a.m.
