NORWICH- The Getthere Mobility Management Program will be providing transportation for residents to COVID-19 vaccine appointments, in addition to other health-related services.
In 2014, the Getthere program created Connection to Care, or CTC, a program aiming to meet the transportation needs of rural communities in South Central New York. This program has continued to grow over the years, and they are now extending assistance to those looking to get the COVID-19 vaccine.
Bill Wagner, director of the Getthere Mobility Management Program, says “we are committed to making sure transportation is not an issue for someone getting vaccinated.”
Currently, Getthere and CTC serves Broome, Chenango, Delaware, Otsego, and Tioga counties, with Chenango County being the second largest in terms of residents needing assistance. They utilize private cabs, vans, and buses, as well as the help of volunteer drivers to get residents to these appointments. The Chenango County sector of the program also works with Chenango County United Way to help offset the costs of transportation.
“Anyone looking for a ride can call us, we will provide financial assistance as well as a ride,” says Wagner.
He also said they would like to collaborate with local pop-up vaccination locations, and are encouraging them to reach out as they are established. He hopes to work with them to create transportation hubs for residents in those areas.
At this time, Getthere does not aid in securing a vaccination appointment. However, Wagner states this is something they may address in the future depending on the needs of the public. For now, residents may contact the Office for Aging or the Public Health office for assistance in making these appointments.
Residents requiring transportation can reach out to Getthere through their call center. A staff member will work with the caller to determine their needs and create an appropriate transportation plan.
“Right now we’re averaging about 30 plus appointments per day,” says Wagner. “We’re helping a lot of people.”
