Norwich Common Council approves Hope and Healing 5K run
NORWICH – During last week's common council meeting, board members voted to approve the Hope and Healing 5k run and walk, which is organized by the Chenango County Child Advocacy Center.
The event is scheduled for Saturday, April 24, and will start in East Park. The run is set to begin at 11 a.m., but will be preceded by registration at 10 a.m., and a Zumba session at 10:30 a.m. Participants may also register online starting Monday, March 23.
The Child Advocacy Center is a Norwich-based organization aiming to provide assistance and resources to children who are victims of abuse, assault, or are witnesses to violent crime. The group hopes that the upcoming 5K will help to raise awareness about issues relating to child abuse.
The CAC also arranges other community outreach programs, such as the Pinwheels for Prevention project.
The Pinwheels for Prevention project is an ongoing campaign to raise awareness about child abuse. The Child Advocacy Center is providing blue and silver pinwheels placed in sand buckets to various local agencies that work with them, as well as local businesses.
The CAC states that the pinwheel, “has come to serve as a physical reminder of the great childhoods we want for all children. And as a symbol, the cyclical nature of the pinwheel calls to mind the positive cycles of love and support we want to help families create.” The pinwheel was first introduced as the national symbol of child abuse prevention by Prevent Child Abuse America in 2008.
For the month of March, the CAC is also providing an online educational series discussing teen dating violence. This series can be found on their Facebook page, facebook.com/ChenangoCAC.
Also during last week’s common council meeting, Mayor Shawn Sastri proclaimed the month of April 2021 to be Child Abuse Prevention month. The proclamation, which was read aloud during the meeting, stated that “child abuse prevention must be a priority to confront the reality that an estimated 656,243 children nationwide are victims of abuse and neglect each year.”
The proclamation also acknowledged the hard work put in by the CAC in the past year, stating that “in 2020, the Child Advocacy Center (CAC) interviewed 153 children impacted by a crime in the Chenango County region. In addition, the CAC provided 329 counseling sessions, provided emotional support and resources to 147 secondary victims and provided case management services [to] 73 adolescents with high-risk behaviors.”
