Police: Road rage leads to gunfire

AFTON – A Bainbridge man is facing felony charges after allegedly pulling over and shooting out another person’s rear window.

According to New York State Police Public Information Officer Aga Dembinska, the incident occurred at 5:55 p.m., on March 19, on state Highway 41 in the Village of Afton.

Dembinska said the individual, who was later identified as Delos E. Decker, 62, of Bainbridge, left the scene. She said after pulling over, Decker pulled out a firearm and shot out the victim’s rear window.

“Someone was able to identify that truck, we brought him in for questioning, and subsequently an arrest was made,” said Dembinska. “Don’t engage in road rage, if you feel as though someone is trying to provoke you to distance yourself from them.”

“It's just not worth getting into an accident over road rage.”

She said about five days after the incident, Decker was charged with second-degree criminal possession of a weapon, first-degree reckless endangerment, and third-degree criminal mischief.

“After an investigation, Decker was arrested by members of the Bureau of Criminal Investigation,” she added. “Decker was arraigned virtually and remanded to the Chenango County Jail on $10,000 cash bail or $15,000 bond.”

Dembinska said the arrest was made possible thanks to the individual who called in with information.
