Norwich Girls Swimming hosts Section IV Class A Championships Prelims

NORWICH – With a chance to punch a ticket to the finals of the Section IV Class A Championships held on Saturday April 24th in Maine-Endwell, the Norwich Purple Tornado girls varsity swim team hit the pool on Thursday night for a chance to extend their season. With a cumulative of over 100 seconds of personal bests performed by the lady Tornado, the team was peaking at the right time.
“I’m so proud, [I] don’t even know what to say… they just make me love this sport. Just never know where it’s going to go with an 8 week season, but these girls nailed it. We are so grateful just to have been able to go this far with championships” said Norwich head coach Saundra Gantt on her team’s performance.
“We know a lot of teams aren’t getting that opportunity, so [the girls] just wanted to have fun and they swam so well!”
In the first event of the evening, the 200 yard medley relay, the quartet of Abby Hansen, Kaitlyn Blaisure, Nina Kman and Angela Carlson finished first in a fast time of 1:58.8; beating their seed time by just over two seconds.
In 200 yard freestyle, Mikayla Sastri finished first with a time of 2:17.99, beating her seed time by five seconds. Norwich junior Tanner Olds finished right behind Sastri in second place timing 2:21.54; Olds beat her seed time by six seconds.
Norwich’s Abby Hansen and Nina Kman both finished first and second in the 200 yard intermediate race with Hansen timing 2:28 flat and Kman finishing with a time of 2:32.27.
Tornado seniors Kaitlyn Blaisure and Angela Carlson finished first and third respectively in the 50 yard freestyle race with Blaisure timing 25.41 and Carlson clocking in at 26.55. Blaisure and Carlson would again repeat with top finishes in the 100 yard freestyle. Blaisure finished first posting a quick time of 57.06 and Carlson placing second in 1:00.17.
In the 100 yard butterfly action, Nina Kman logged in a first place finish with a time of 1:10.83 and teammate Julia Llewellyn placed third with a time of 1:21.37.
Entering into the longer races of the evening, first with the 500 yard freestyle, Tanner Old posted a second place finish for Norwich in a time of 6:14.15; beating her seed time by a whopping 15 seconds. Norwich teammate Mikayla Sastri placed third with a time of 6:28.76, beating her seed time by 5 seconds.
In the 200 yard freestyle relay, the team of Adyson Whaley, Molly Hannan, Mikayla Sastri and Tanner Olds finished in a time of 2:00.14, finishing first. In the final relay of the night, the 400 yard freestyle relay, the team of Angela Carlson, Nina Kman, Abby Hansen and Kaitlyn Blaisure placed first, timing 3:53.53, 17 seconds better than their seeding time.
In the final two individual events on the night; the 100 yard backstroke and the 100 yard breaststroke, Norwich once again performed superbly. In the 100 yard backstroke, Abby Hansen posted a first place finish in a time of 1:06.05 and NHS teammate Eva Blenis placed third in a time of 1:07.94. Heading over to the 100 yard breaststroke, Adyson Whaley placed second for Norwich with a time of 1:28.47 and teammate Megan Funke was right behind Whaley in third with a time of 1:31.14.
“The hard part now is seeing how well everyone else swam to see who is going to finals” said Coach Gantt, noting that only the top 16 swimmers in Section IV class A will advance to compete in each event. The next 24 hours will be a difficult one as not only the swimmers for Norwich, but all swimmers in Section IV will be waiting to see the times of other schools, hoping that they too can continue their season and compete for the coveted Section IV Class A crown.
