Woman ticketed after striking Sherburne Library with truck
SHERBURNE – A woman is facing criminal charges after allegedly driving drunk and striking the Sherburne Public Library with a truck on Saturday.
According to Chenango County Sheriff’s Office Lt. Joshua Gould, law enforcement was dispatched at approximately 9 p.m. on Saturday with a report that an individual in a Chevy pick-up truck drove into the northeast corner of the Sherburne Library.
Gould said after arriving on scene, Sherry Knapp, 54, of Sherburne was charged with aggravated driving while intoxicated, reckless driving, and failure to keep right.
“According to the report, she tested more than double the legal limit at that time,” said Gould. “It doesn’t appear that she sustained injuries in the accident.”
He said she received an appearance ticket for the incident due to the criminal justice reform laws, and is scheduled to appear in court next month.
The Sherburne Public Library released information on social media stating that a car accident over the weekend has forced library representatives to restrict the library to curbside pickup only for the time being.
“Unfortunately someone drove into the side of the building on Saturday evening and currently it is not safe to use the library doors,” said Sherburne Public Library representatives on social media. “Thank you all for the thoughts and concern.”
“It was an accident and we believe not a personal attack on the library.”
Representatives said damage to the property included a destroyed sign, a small tree, and a direct impact with a portion of the building. They said the driver of the vehicle wasn’t injured, but was taken into custody by law enforcement.
