Purple Heart recipients invited to attend ceremony in Norwich

NORWICH – Individuals who have served in a branch of the military and have received a Purple Heart decoration are invited to attend an event recognizing their efforts and designating the county as a Purple Heart community.
According to Chenango County Veteran Services Officer Joseph Coe, the event will take place at 10 a.m. on May 1 at the Chenango County Courthouse.
“Senator Daphne Jordan is trying to designate New York as a Purple Heart state, and we’re happy to show our support,” said Coe. “There are many Purple Heart veterans in Chenango County, and we’re happy to help provide recognition for their service.”
“We know there are at least 22 Purple Heart recipients locally, and we’re hoping that they’re able to attend.”
Coe said social distancing and masks are required at the event.
In a statement regarding Purple Heart veterans, New York State Senator Daphne Jordan discussed the importance of honoring America’s heroes, and her legislation which is currently on the senate floor.
“The Purple Heart is the oldest, and among the most venerated, American military decorations awarded in the name of the President to those wounded or killed while serving, on or after April 5, 1917, with the U.S. Military,” said Senator Jordan. “Designating New York as a Purple Heart State is an important step to honor the heroic sacrifices that our armed forces have made to protect our country.”
“These localities and entities understand the importance of honoring America’s brave heroes with this designation, and they also recognize that such a designation ensures their locality is viewed as welcoming and appreciative of our courageous patriots who have served.”
She said by adopting this non-partisan designation on a statewide basis, New York State can further demonstrate its appreciation for Purple Heart veterans.
