NORWICH – For over 20 years now, the Sheriff's Office has been an active participant in the NYS Governor Traffic Safety Committee's Child Passenger Safety Training Program, which is designed to raise awareness and convey accurate technical information about proper child restraint usage.
According to representatives of the Chenango County Sheriff’s Office, New York State law requires all children to be restrained in an appropriate child restraint system while riding in a motor vehicle, until they reach their 8th birthday. They said effective November 1, 2019, all children under the age of 2 must ride in a rear-facing car seat.
The sheriff’s office’s Child Safety Seat Inspection/Installation Program provides free child passenger safety seat inspections, to include a new certified car seat for any existing seats that have reached their expiration date, or are deemed unsafe for any reason.
There are other criteria that also need to be met before a replacement seat can be obtained.
Representatives said Chenango County currently has one NYS Certified Instructor, and nine NYS Certified Child Safety Seat Installation Technicians, who are able to inspect/install car seats and educate caregivers on the proper fit and installation of the seats.
They said the COVID pandemic has negatively impacted the Child Safety Seat inspections and installations over the past year, but thanks to employee vaccinations, and improving COVID numbers, they are happy to report that our program is back in full capacity and ready for appointments.
It may be possible to have the booster seat replaced, however, you would need to make an appointment with one of the technicians so that they can certify the seat is no longer safe to use, and that the caregiver meets other eligible criteria in order to have the seat replaced.
For more information, and to make an appointment for a Child Safety Seat inspection/installation, please contact Deputy Kelly Hayner (office: 607-337-1874; email: khayner@co.chenango.ny.us).
