POLICE: Men who stole from Sherburne business arrested after months-long investigation
CHENANGO COUNTY – The Chenango County Sheriff’s Office has charged two men with crimes including grand larceny after an eight month long investigation into a stolen construction trailer taken from a Sherburne business.
According to Chenango County Sheriff Ernest Cutting, Chad A. Youngs, 31, of Sherburne and Clifford J. Smith, Sr., 34, of McDonough stole a construction trailer in 2020 from a Sherburne business.
Cutting said on September 30, 2020 the Chenango County Sheriff’s Office received a complaint that a construction trailer was stolen from the Sherburne business.
“On November 6, 2020, sheriff's detectives executed a search warrant at a location in the Town of McDonough,” said Cutting. “While conducting the search warrant, Sheriff's Detectives located the stolen construction trailer.”
“When the trailer was discovered, it had been repainted and the side racks had been cut off from the trailer in an attempt to conceal its original identity.”
He said the trailer had been severely damaged and was inoperable, and no arrests were made at the time the trailer was located.
A few months later in May two people were arrested and released with appearance tickets.
Youngs was charged with third-degree grand larceny, and Smith was charged with third-degree larceny, second-degree criminal mischief, third-degree criminal mischief, and tampering with physical evidence.
Chenango County Sheriff’s Office Detective Chad O’Hara said the investigation started off with security camera footage from the business, and people throughout the community telling law enforcement what they could.
“Thanks to the community and that footage, the trailer was located, it was a different color but at that point but we were able to get a search warrant,” said, O’Hara. “We executed the search warrant, and found that the trailer's side racks had been cut off and were hidden with other parts of the trailer throughout the property.”
“We were also able to search the suspect’s cell phone which was greatly beneficial to our investigation.”
O’Hara said they were confident they had at least one of the people responsible for the theft, but that there was also a second individual who was involved. He said the trailer received about $5,000 worth of damage in an attempt to mask its true identity.
“We knew we had to have him dead to rights, but we also knew there was more than one person,” he said. “After following some leads we were able to make the second arrest.”
“At this point we’ve done the best job we could, but now it’s up to the criminal justice system to do the best it can.”
He added that both Youngs and Smith were processed and released with appearance tickets, and are scheduled to appear in the Sherburne Town Court at a later date.
O’Hara said the Chenango County Sheriff’s Office will continue to do the best it can to make victims whole regardless of state politics.
