OXFORD – Arbor Day in the Village was cold and blustery, but residents still came out for the celebration and tree seedling give-away on May 1.
For this special occasion, filling in for the honorable Mayor Stark was Village Deputy Mayor, Dale Leach. Leach announced an Arbor Day Proclamation for the Village of Oxford. He said, “I urge all citizens to celebrate Arbor Day and to support efforts to protect our trees and woodlands, and further, I urge all citizens to plant trees to gladden the heart and promote the well-being of this and future generations.”
John Godfrey, of the Village Tree Board, introduced the other members of the Board: Gray Stevens, Jean Curtis, Jeanie Petersen, Sandy Dain, and honorary member, Marian Godfrey. Next he introduced guest speaker, DEC Senior Forester, Greg Owens.
Forester Owens mentioned how fortunate Oxford is to have such a great Tree Board and how wonderful it is that they just received a sizable DEC Community Forestry grant for tree planting! Owens said, "…through this Tree City program, the National Arbor Day Foundation recognizes communities that have a long-term commitment to, not just tree planting, but the tree care, and Oxford has participated in this program for an outstanding 27 years." He then presented Trustee Leach with the National Arbor Day Foundation Tree City USA flag and a Tree City USA “leaf” for their plaque (which resides in the Village Hall).
John Godfrey urged the residents of the Village to let the Board know (by way of the Village Hall) if someone wants a street tree. The Village will make arrangements to plant a tree between the street and the curb. John went on to thank Dale Leach; Greg Owens; and Jim Baldwin, who provided the sound system. While the usual fifth graders and their Arbor Day posters were not there, John gave thanks to Charity Gipp, the Middle School art teacher, for her help.
Tree planting instructions and printed Arbor Day posters were available. Last, but not least, all the seedlings were given away by the Tree Board members. It was a great day for tree planting - despite the cold. Visit http://treeboard.oxfordny.com/ to learn more about the Village of Oxford Tree Board.
