NORWICH – A Norwich man is facing arson charges following reports of a fire earlier this month on Cortland Street in the City of Norwich.

Jason A. Beardsley, 38, of Norwich was charged with third-degree arson, a class C felony, and fifth-degree arson, a class A misdemeanor following the incident.

At approximately 6:24 p.m. on Tuesday May 4, the Norwich City Police Department received a radio dispatch to respond to a house fire at the apartment building of 57 Cortland Street in the City of Norwich.

Norwich Police Officers responded to the scene with the City of Norwich Fire Department, and the fire was eventually knocked down by fire personnel.

At that time City of Norwich Fire Department Chief Jan Papelino said when the fire department arrived on scene light smoke was visible from the outside, but it took firefighters several minutes to knock down the fire due to the apartment’s layout.

Papelino said everyone in the building was evacuated, and no one was injured in the incident. He said only one apartment seems to have suffered major damage. He added that at that time the cause of the fire was under investigation.

Following this incident, Norwich Detectives, assisted by City of Norwich Fire Investigators and Chenango County Fire Investigators, closed this case with the arrest of Jason A. Beardsley.

Norwich Police Department Detective Sgt. Reuban Roach said shortly after the fire the investigation began.

“Norwich Police Officers were on the scene within minutes of the 911 call, and an investigation ensued,” said Roach. “Working closely with fire investigators, and the Chenango County District Attorney’s Office, we were able to locate and arrest Mr. Beardsley in regards to this incident.”

Norwich Police Department Chief Rodney Marsh also spoke on the case and said, “We are thankful that there were no injuries in this case, and that we were able to process evidence, conduct interviews, and make an arrest of the principal involved.”

Law enforcement officials said in compliance with bail reform laws, Beardsley was released on an appearance ticket to appear at 10:30 a.m. in Norwich City Court on May 25.
