NORWICH — The annual Chenango County Dairy Day is back on, and set to return on Saturday June 19.

Dairy Day is a long-standing agricultural event, held every year at the Norwich Fairgrounds. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, last year's event had to be cancelled.

This year, however, it is returning with only minor adjustments, according to Dairy Day Chairman Marjorie Davis.

"First of all we moved the location," said Davis. "So instead of being an exhibition hall we will be open in the Ag. Area of the Chenango County Fairgrounds."

Davis also stated that the event will be in compliance with current COVID guidelines, including mask wearing if you are not fully vaccinated. She said there will be large signs reminding visitors of these rules.

Dairy Day will kick off with a parade at 10:30 a.m., according to Executive Director of Cornell Cooperative Extension Ken Smith.

"Dairy day always begins with the parade of like, dairy equipment, and usually there's some tractors and dairy trucks, antique cars are typically part of the parade," said Smith.

The main event will begin at 11 a.m. and run until 2 p.m., said Davis. She also said the parade will be at the fairgrounds center.

"We've moved the parade to the fairgrounds center from the grandstand, so people can be social distanced," said Davis.

Visitors can also expect several exhibits and activities aimed at educating the public about agriculture and the dairy industry, Smith explained.

"So we're going to have a variety of events for kids and for grownups to learn a little about the dairy industry and the impacts of farming on Chenango County," said Smith.

Davis stated that any exhibits relating to agriculture are still welcome to reach out about being a part of this year's dairy day.

"Educational exhibits and activities relating to agriculture are still welcome and they can contact me," said Davis.

The events for this year's Dairy Day include a pedal-tractor pull for kids, displays of tractors and other equipment, calves and other dairy animals, and what Smith calls "make and take" programs where visitors can make their own favors to take home.

"We'll have what we call 'make and take' programs from our regular 4H program which might be a little kit to make ice cream or something of that nature," said Smith.

There will also be giveaways and door prizes, said Davis, including ice cream from Gilligan's and Hoppie's, and other dairy products.

The Chenango County Dairy Princess, Shelby Benjamin, will also be in attendance, according to Davis. Benjamin is currently the reigning New York State Dairy Princess, and was crowned in February.

This year's Dairy Day will also hold a coloring contest. Davis explained that entries will be available online for visitors to download, and submit to their office when finished.

"The coloring contest entries will be available online, so families can download and then send them to the extension office," said Davis. "They will be available soon."

Davis also emphasized that the 20th Annual Dairy Day will be the first in-person, county-wide event in Chenango County since the start of the pandemic.

"The thing we would really like to point out is this is the first county-wide event since COVID," said Davis. "And so we encourage folks to come out and enjoy the outdoors and enjoy the activities."

Dairy Day is entirely funded through donations, Davis said. Those wishing to contribute can send donations directly to Dairy Day organizers and the Cornell Cooperative Extension.

"Financial support is still needed because this is all a volunteer thing," said Davis. "Donations can be sent to Dairy Day and Cornell Cooperative."
