Police: Vehicle involved in fatal Cincinnatus hit and run located

CINCINNATUS – On Tuesday two bicycle riders were struck by a vehicle, leaving one person dead in the Town of Cincinnatus.

Wednesday, police announced they had located the vehicle suspected in the collision and were questioning a possible suspect, but no arrests were reported by time of print Friday morning.

The New York State Police have also identified the victims.

On Friday Troop C Public Information Officer Aga Dembinska, said investigators continue to conduct interviews with the person believed to have been operating the vehicle, but the investigation is ongoing.

Dembinska said at 7:26 p.m. June 15 New York State Police at Homer responded to a report of a hit and run involving bicyclists that were struck by a vehicle. She said the incident occurred near the 29-hundred block of Route 26 in the Town of Cincinnatus.

She added that there were four bicyclists riding together, but that only two of them were hit, and one of them was killed.

“The deceased bicyclist is identified as Kitt Warren, age 67 of De Ruyter, NY,” said Dembinska. “The injured bicyclist is identified as John C. Rutan, age 67 of McGraw, NY.”

“Two other bicyclists were not injured and are identified as a 34-year-old female of Greene, NY and a 64-year-old male of Cincinnatus, NY. “

Dembinska said the operator of the vehicle didn’t stop after hitting the bikers, and that the vehicle was ultimately located by a Cortland County Sheriff’s Deputy at an address in the Town of Willet.

She said Rutan was transported by Cincinnatus ambulance to Upstate Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries, and that while State Route 26 was closed for several hours following the incident police reopened it at about 3 a.m. Wednesday morning.

She added that state police were being assisted by deputies from the Cortland County Sheriff’s Department, the Cincinnatus Fire Department and Cincinnatus Ambulance.
“More information will be released when it is available,” said Dembinska.
